Back in February, Caffeine’s Business Development Manager, Joe, headed to India on a coffee research trip. One of the highlights of the visit, was meeting with India’s ‘First Lady of Coffee’, Sunalini Menon.
Sunalini is a remarkable woman and Joe was lucky enough to hear her story first hand. She shared her inspiring journey, recounting the challenges she faced in a male-dominated industry. Despite facing discouragement from her male peers, who believed her career in coffee was a waste of money since she would soon be married, Sunalini remained determined to pursue her passion.
Her determination paid off, and Sunalini went on to achieve an extraordinary career in the coffee industry. She became renowned as the first professional female coffee cupper, breaking barriers and paving the way for other women in the field. From 1975 to 1995, she held the prestigious position of Director of Quality Control for the Coffee Board of India, where she played a vital role in ensuring the highest standards of coffee quality.
Today, Sunalini continues to contribute to the coffee community as a coffee competition judge on a global scale. She also dedicates her time to supporting and advising local farmers, sharing her expertise and helping them improve their coffee production.
Sunalini’s journey and achievements are a huge inspiration, and Joe was blown away by her story determination, resilience, and passion.
