At the heart of the new coffee collab between Caffeine Ltd and Drake & Morgan, lies a remarkable story of empowerment and community support. The Peruvian coffee used in the Drake & Morgan blend comes from a female-led organisation known as the Café Femenino Foundation, which was established in December 2004. This foundation was born out of a desire to help women and their families thrive in coffee-growing communities, making it a cause that resonates deeply with Drake & Morgan, especially considering their own female leadership—Gillian, the owner, exemplifies this commitment.
A Commitment to Empowerment
The Café Femenino Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of women in over ten countries, funding a variety of impactful grants. These initiatives include community gardens, animal breeding programmes, health and sanitation projects, water initiatives, and income diversification and nutrition training, among others. The foundation’s work has significantly improved the livelihoods of many coffee producers and their families.
The Founders’ Vision
The foundation’s founders are former coffee importers who uncovered a troubling reality while traveling to coffee growing regions: many women lacked a voice in family decisions, had no control over family resources, and faced social, political, and economic disenfranchisement. This lack of rights often led to poverty, isolation, and alarming rates of abuse.
A Unique Approach to Funding
What sets the Café Femenino Foundation apart is its structure as a non-profit organisation supported by volunteers. Every penny raised—after covering operational expenses—goes directly towards funding grants that are carefully overseen by the foundation in collaboration with other non-governmental organisations and local coffee co-operatives.
Making a Difference
The impact of the Café Femenino Foundation is profound. Not only is it addressing poverty, but it is also elevating the status of women in these often-isolated communities. By reducing levels of abuse and drawing attention to the challenges faced by women in the coffee industry, the foundation is fostering a greater awareness and support for these vital issues.
We are incredibly proud of this collaboration. The more coffee we sell in partnership with Drake & Morgan, the more vital support we return to the coffee communities we rely on.
